EUGENE DELACROIX (1798–1863), circle Revolutionary Scene with Two Figures Unframed oil on canvas. Dimensions: 24.5 x 19 cm Provenance: Probably from the collection of Joséphine de Lavalette (1802–1886), B. Pagneux, Paris 1988, and the collection of Jean Eugène Guillaud, Monaco. A dramatic composition depicting two figures in a setting evoking an insurrectionary episode, rendered in a muted palette of browns, ochres, and blacks, accented by touches of red and green reminiscent of a standard or banner in the background. The main figure, seen in profile with her gaze raised, wears a light-colored, shoulder-baring garment, in a pose reminiscent of certain Romantic allegories of liberty and the people in arms. A second figure, in the foreground, wearing a headscarf, carries a dagger at her belt. Accompanied by a piece of paper from 1988 bearing the inscription: Delacroix, La Valette 1984. Joséphine de Lavalette (1802–1886) was the daughter of Count Antoine de Lavalette. She was one of Eugène Delacroix’s most important lovers, as well as his confidante and muse throughout his life.
