PIETRO CAVALIERE TEMPESTA (1637–1701) The Flight into Egypt Oil on canvas Dimensions: 33 x 39 cm - A painter of religious subjects, hunting scenes, landscapes, and seascapes, he was likely the son and pupil of Pieter Mulier the Elder (1615–1670). Born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, he began his career in the style of Frans Snyders, creating remarkable hunting scenes, but he also painted seascapes and storm scenes that would later earn him the nickname “Tempesta.” In 1667, he met a Carmelite monk in Antwerp and left for Rome with the intention of converting to Catholicism. It was precisely in Rome that he achieved such considerable success that he was able to surround himself with assistants in his studio.
