JOHANN HEINRICH SCHÖNFELD (1609–1684), circle The Massacre of the Innocents Oil on canvas featuring a dramatic and lively composition depicting the biblical episode from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, in which King Herod orders the killing of all children under the age of two in Bethlehem. The work is structured like an ancient theatrical frieze across multiple planes. The use of strong light contrasts, the warm color palette punctuated by touches of Naples blue and Naples yellow, and the poignant expressiveness of the faces are fully in keeping with the mid-17th-century Neapolitan Baroque tradition, which was strongly influenced by Caravaggism and Roman Classicism. Dimensions: 73 x 97 cm
