GIOVANNI GHISOLFI (1623/32–1683) Lively Scene with Roman Ruins Oil on re-stretched canvas. Dimensions: 51 x 40 cm - An Italian Baroque painter born in Milan, Ghisolfi was initially trained by his uncle Antonio Volpino. In 1650, he moved to Rome with his artist friend Antonio Busca to study under Salvatore Rosa, where he had the opportunity to become acquainted with the paintings of Pietro da Cortona. There, he created vedute—landscapes featuring the ruins of ancient Rome—that were highly prized by his contemporaries. Upon his return to Lombardy in 1661, he painted frescoes in a chapel at the Carthusian monastery in Pavia; then, in 1664, he was called to Vicenza to execute a series of decorative landscape frescoes in the Trissino and Giustiniani Baggio palaces.
