GIOVANNI ANTONIO GUARDI (1698/99–1760), attributed Saint George and the Dragon Oil on panel Dimensions: 31 x 42 cm - An Italian Rococo painter active in Venice, son of Domenico Guardi and brother of Francesco and Niccolo, he began his training in his father’s studio before furthering his studies at the Pittoni school. Upon his father’s death, he took over the studio and worked on religious paintings in collaboration with his brothers. After producing a series of portrait copies at the request of an Austrian collector, he was admitted as a figure painter to the Venetian Academy thanks to the intervention of his brother-in-law, Giambattista Tiepolo. His decorative style reveals the influence of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta in its luminous colors and that of Sebastiano Ricci in its delicate line work.
