PRAGUE SCHOOL, RUDOLFINE, EARLY 17TH CENTURY Pair of large Baroque allegorical vanitas paintings Important pair of very large oil-on-canvas paintings Dimensions: 158 x 106 cm These complex Mannerist compositions, allegorical and richly symbolic, are part of the vibrant artistic milieu surrounding the court of Emperor Rudolf II (late 16th–early 17th century). The Prague School, which flourished under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II (reigned 1576–1612), brought together artists from all over Europe (Bartholomeus Spranger, Hans von Aachen, Joseph Heintz the Elder, and others) in a late Mannerist style characterized by complex allegorical compositions, a penchant for symbolic accumulation, and technical virtuosity in the rendering of materials (metal, fabric, flesh)—all elements found in this Vanity, such as the angel’s gleaming armor and pink drapery, and the putto’s skin tone.
