GUIDO RENI (1575–1642), attributed Head of an Old Man Oil on canvas Dimensions: 51.5 x 37.5 cm A bearded elderly man (probably an apostle or a philosopher/prophet), head raised, gaze turned upward with an intense expression, with abundant white hair and beard, his hair disheveled, a brown drape over his shoulders stands out against a neutral, dark background, highlighting the strongly lit face Guido Reni (Bologna, 1575–1642), one of the major masters of the Bolognese school, trained under the Carracci, produced numerous “character heads” (heads of elderly men, apostles, and philosophers), a highly sought-after genre in its own right, often used as preparatory studies or as collectible works in their own right. This type of expressive head, with its ecstatic gaze raised toward the heavens, is very characteristic of the master’s repertoire and that of his workshop.
