CIRCLE OF ANTOINE VAN DYCK (1599–1641) Portrait of the Artist Cornelis Schut Oil on canvas Dimensions: 30 x 25 cm Provenance: Bertolami, Rome In the upper right corner, the painting bears a coat of arms and a barely legible inscription: “CORNELIS SCHUT / (...) FIGURAE / (...) ANTWERPAE / AETATIS SUAE 46.” Thanks to this inscription on the canvas and to the engraving made by Lucas Vorsterman around 1645 after a drawing by Antoine Van Dyck, we can identify this painting as a portrait of the painter Cornelis Schut (Antwerp, 1597–1655), a student of Rubens. The painting faithfully reproduces the engraving, with the exception of a reduction in its lower portion.
