JAN VAN DER STRAET, known as STRADANUS (1523–1605) This print is part of the famous series “Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium,” published in Antwerp by Philippe Galle in the late 16th century (around 1578–1580). The scene depicts the capture of a massive serpent (dragon) native to India, which lives hidden in the waters and is starving; it emerges from its hiding place to attack a herd hanging from a shady tree; it is ultimately subdued with clubs and fire, as described in the Latin text at the bottom of the plate: "India gives birth to a serpent of immense, vigorous body / which, accustomed to lurking in the waters, driven by hunger / emerges and, hanging from a shady tree, pounces / on the herd; but it is slain by clubs and fire." Engraved by C. De Mallery. Dimensions: 25 x 30.4 cm
