CHINA, QING DYNASTY Bronze incense burner with a gray-green patina, shaped like a chimera (pixiu 貔貅 or bixie 辟邪), a mythical protective creature in Chinese tradition. Hollow body, pierced on the underside; the stopper on the back is missing. Dimensions: 7 x 17 x 8 cm The pixiu is considered a powerful talisman that attracts wealth and wards off evil spirits; it differs from a toad in its more elongated body, dragon-like scales, more pronounced mouth, and clawed limbs, which are clearly visible here.
