CHIURAZZI FOUNDRY, NAPLES (19th–20th CENTURY) Very significant sculpture of Hermes seated on a rock (125 x 115 cm) Large bronze model with a nuanced gray patina resting on a marble rock base. Exceptional work, marked by the Chiurazzi Foundry on the back. Dimensions: approx. 125 x 115 x 75 cm, very heavy. This piece is a reproduction of the extraordinary statue discovered during excavations at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum in 1758 and now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It depicts Hermes (Mercury to the Romans), the god of travelers and merchants, resting. Experts agree that it is a 1st-century CE Roman copy based on a 3rd-century BCE Greek bronze.
