PAIR OF LARGE BAROQUE CANDLESTICKS IN SOLID SILVER Altar candlesticks in solid silver, repoussé, chiseled, and partially gilded (vermeil); each piece features a flared circular bowl with gadrooned decoration, topped by a wide wrought-iron spike. The tall, square-section shaft is adorned on each side with cascading foliage and chiseled palmettes, and is surmounted by volutes forming a capital. The curved, pyramid-shaped tripod base is richly decorated, featuring major liturgical and esoteric symbols on its various sides: the Eye of Providence, the Lamb of God, and the dove of the Holy Spirit against a background of sunbeams. The base is accented by a frieze of geometric Greek motifs, and the entire piece rests on three powerful lion’s-paw feet. Baroque period, Italy, 17th–18th century.
