EQUESTRIAN STATUE - Mali - Dogon Mid-20th century. Wood. Dimensions: H. 55 cm. The elongated face, arrowhead-shaped nose, stylized beard, and angular forms of the horse and rider’s bodies are characteristic of Dogon art. The rider holds the reins in his left hand, and his right arm is bent toward his head. In Dogon cosmogony, the horseman, Hogon, symbolizes a figure of spiritual authority—a religious leader or a mythical ancestor. The horse, meanwhile—a rare and costly animal in the Sahel region—is an unquestionable symbol of power. Condition: Dark, matte patina from use, crusty in places. Research and documentation: Coryse Mwape – Art historian specializing in ancient African art. Internal ref: 296
