Tughra of Sultan Ahmed III (r. 1703–1730) Pigments and gold on paper Turkey, 18th century This beautiful tughra belongs to Sultan Ahmed III and bears his title: ?ah Ahmed bin Mehmed ?ah Han el-muzaffer daima. The composition is dated 1135 H. (1722–23 AD) and includes the name of Mustafa Pasha, the sub-governor (kaymakam) of Istanbul, in the lower left corner. The Tughra is drawn in black ink at the center of the composition and illuminated with gold floral motifs (tezhip). The margins feature cartouches adorned with beautiful polychrome bouquets on a gold background. A chevron frieze frames the composition, which is set in an old gilded wooden frame.
