SARREGUEMINES “Head Jug,” known as “Grotesque” among collectors Circa 1920–1930 Anthropomorphic pitcher made by casting, in fine earthenware coated with glazes colored by metal oxides, known as Majolica. It depicts the head of a chubby, smiling man. It bears the form number 3181, which corresponds, in the Sarreguemines pottery factory’s list of decorative and novelty item numbers, to a “Head Jug.” This same form number, 3181, is—unusually for Sarreguemines—found on a series of five different pitchers, numbered 1 through 5. Stamped on the underside of the base H 17 x W 17 x D 11 cm Minor signs of wear
