Jules BRATEAU (1844–1923) A truncated-conical pewter tankard decorated with three large arches separated by Gothic arcades and pinnacles, featuring the three Fates accompanied by floral and plant motifs. The handle is decorated with flowers, children, and a heron. Unlike other examples, the lid does not bear the Latin inscription “Parcis, feliciter, obstat.” Shell-shaped thumb rest. The artist’s clear hallmark appears in the cartouche of Lachesis, and a gallows hallmark is engraved on the neck. (Minor chips at the base) Height: 21.5 cm. Note: Model created in 1884. A piece of exceptionally fine craftsmanship. Bibliography: “Jules BRATEAU” by Jean-Christophe BOUCAUD, who specifies in his book that specimen No. 1 is housed at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The three Fates: Clotho, the spinner, wove the thread of life; Lachesis, the restorer, unwound it; and Atropos, the inexorable one, cut it.
