MIECZYSLAW ADAM WYSOCKI (1900–1930) Landscape with a house signed ‘Wysocki’ (lower left); stamped ‘Krakow’ (on the reverse of the stretcher), with a partially preserved exhibition label of the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Lviv, dated 1932 (on the reverse) oil on canvas 32.8 × 33.5 cm EXHIBITED: Lviv, Society of Friends of Fine Arts, 1932 (according to a label on the reverse) Mieczyslaw Adam Wysocki (1900–1930) was a Polish painter and a founding member of the Lviv avant-garde group Artes. Despite his short career, he was actively involved in the artistic developments of the 1920s, studying and exhibiting in Poland, France and Italy. Wysocki began his artistic training under Stanislaw Kaczor-Batowski in Lviv before attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (1921–1922). He subsequently continued his studies in Paris, where he attended Fernand Leger’s studio and studied under Józef Pankiewicz. During his time in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and Galerie Jeune Peinture. Returning to Lviv in 1929, Wysocki became an assistant in the Department of Interior Decoration at Lviv Polytechnic and co-founded the avant-garde group Artes. Its inaugural exhibition in January 1930 included forty of his works, some of which demonstrated affinities with Surrealism and the painting of Giorgio de Chirico. Wysocki died in a road accident in August 1930, at the age of 29. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Lviv in 1932. The present painting bears a label from this institution dated 1932, suggesting that it may have been included in the exhibition.
