THAILAND Provenance: Private collection, Brussels, acquired in 1988 (according to insurance inventory) The buddhapada (Buddha’s footprint) is an important symbol of Buddhism in Thailand. Possibly originating from the aniconic tradition of early Buddhism, it is an object of devotion that evokes the sacred presence of the historical Buddha. The footprints are generally carved into stone and decorated with numerous Buddhist symbols, such as a wheel representing the Universal Law (dharma). They are often found in temples or sacred sites and are venerated by the faithful.
