Artcurial Toulouse - Jean-Louis Vedovato

25 - [GOLD-EMBOSSED]. RABELAIS (Fr.). WORKS. Text collated from the first editions, with a biography of the author, notes, and a glossary by Louis Moland. Paris, Garnier frères, [late 19th century]. Two large quarto volumes in the publisher’s decorated red percaline, front cover adorned with a gilt plate by Paul Souze, plain spine decorated with special metal tools, gilt title. Some defects in the binding (a tear at the upper joint of each volume, a small piece of leather missing at the top of one spine, snags with small losses at two cap ends), a few very scattered, faint foxing spots, more pronounced on the first few folios of each volume, one loose quire. ILLUSTRATED EDITION featuring a frontispiece PORTRAIT, 59 PLATES (excluding text), and 614 chapter heads, end-piece illustrations, and vignettes in the text by Gustave DORÉ. This edition reproduces the illustrations from the first printing, dating from 1873, an “incomparable series of magnificent drawings” (Leblanc). A PLEASANT COPY, preserved in its attractive and decorative original publisher’s binding. ¶ Leblanc, 292.
