Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1770–89. 51 volumes in 12mo, marbled fawn sheepskin, double gilt fillet framing on the covers, smooth, compartmentalized, and decorated spine, title and volume number labels in garnet morocco and black sheepskin, edges speckled in red and black (contemporary binding). 3 cap bands worn down, numerous volume number labels rubbed with losses, some minor wear on the bindings. ILLUSTRATED REPRINT in in-12 format—a more manageable size—of the original in-4 edition. It was produced in collaboration with Daubenton and Lacépède. It includes a PORTRAIT of Buffon as the frontispiece of Volume 1 and a large number of out-of-text ENGRAVINGS on steel, as well as maps and plans.
