"Ancient bird's-eye view map of Terracina," created by Braun and Hogenberg based on G. Hoefnagel. "Vetustiss. Ad Mare Thyrrhenum Terracinae Oppidum." (Ancient city of Terracina on the Tyrrhenian Sea.) 1581. ". Copper engraving, printed on paper. This engraving is from the book *La Civitates Orbis Terrarum*, also known as *Braun & Hogenberg*, a six-volume urban atlas and the finest collection of urban views and maps ever published. The book contained 363 engravings. Georg Braun wrote the text accompanying the maps and views on the reverse side. Many of the plates were engraved from the original drawings by a professional artist, Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1600). The first volume was published in Latin in 1572 and the sixth in 1617. Frans Hogenberg, a talented engraver, created the plates for volumes I through IV, and Simon van den Neuwel those for volumes V and VI. Other contributors included the cartographers Daniel Freese and Heinrich Rantzau. Works by Jacob van Deventer, Sebastian Münster, and Johannes Stumpf were also used as references. Translations into German and French were published, making the atlas accessible to a wider audience. Seven more editions followed the first volume in 1575, 1577, 1582, 1588, 1593, 1599, and 1612. Volume 2, initially published in 1575, had subsequent editions in 1597 and 1612. The subsequent volumes, each a treasure trove of historical information, were published in 1581, 1588, 1593, 1599, and 1606. The German translation of the first volume—a testament to its great popularity—was published in 1574, followed by the French edition in 1575. Several printers were involved: Theodor Graminaeus, Heinrich von Aich, Gottfried von Kempen, Johannis Sinniger, Bertram Buchholtz, and Peter von Brachel, all based in Cologne. Dimensions: 33 x 42.5 cm.
