MÜSELER (Wilhelm). — European Art: Peoples and Eras. Berlin, Safari-Verlag, circa 1941–1942. Large 8vo / small square 4vo, publisher’s cardboard binding covered in light gray cloth, title in black Gothic type on the front cover. A comprehensive overview of the history of European art, from the Romanesque period to the Baroque, covering architecture, sculpture, and painting in turn and drawing parallels between the major national schools: Germany, Italy, France, England, and Spain. The work is richly illustrated with 366 reproductions, primarily black-and-white photographs, accompanied by architectural plans, cross-sections, and diagrams within the text. The plates feature, in particular, Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals and monuments, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, as well as a significant collection of European paintings and sculptures. The early edition is well documented: copies from this period are described as having 239 pages and 366 illustrations; a 1942 edition held at the Paderborn University Library has 238 pages. Copy without dust jacket, in its simple publisher’s cloth binding. A few small foxing spots and stains on the cloth, more visible on the covers; interior clean overall, with a few scattered foxing spots. A good working copy of this comprehensive illustrated history of European art.
