MUNCH (Edvard). — Munch and France. Paris, Réunion des Musées Nationaux, 1991. A quarto-sized volume, paperback, with a color-illustrated cover. A comprehensive catalog of the exhibition devoted to the relationship between Edvard Munch and French art, held at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris from September 24, 1991, to January 5, 1992, and then at the Munch Museum in Oslo from January 27 to April 21, 1992. Published under the scholarly direction of Arne Eggum and Rodolphe Rapetti, this volume examines the reciprocal influences between the Norwegian painter and the major French artistic movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In particular, it compares Munch’s work with that of Monet, Caillebotte, Bernard, Gauguin, Redon, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Derain, Dufy, and Marquet, providing a better understanding of his place in the history of European Expressionism. Extensive black-and-white and color illustrations reproducing paintings, drawings, and engravings. The book also includes numerous references to Munch’s diary. A good copy; the cover shows some slight signs of wear.
