MANET (Édouard). — Early Letters. 1848–1849. Trip to Rio. Paris: Louis Rouart et Fils, publishers, n.d. Quarto, paperback, cover printed in red and black, with an illustrated cloth-bound dust jacket. An interesting collection of Édouard Manet’s early correspondence regarding his trip to Brazil in 1848–1849. These letters, written when the future painter was only sixteen years old, provide a valuable account of his early experiences, his observations during the trip, and the development of his artistic sensibility. The volume is accompanied by reproductions of drawings, including a sketch by Manet reproduced on the photographic plate. An interesting publication for the history of the painter’s youth and his early travels. The cover shows some staining and scuffing; the interior appears to be in good condition.
