GAUGUIN (Paul). — Noa Noa. Paris, Club des Libraires de France, no visible date. One volume, quarto size, in the publisher’s binding of coarse-textured beige cloth, front cover adorned with a pasted-on color reproduction, speckled edges, red bookmark. An illustrated edition of this famous autobiographical account by Paul Gauguin, chronicling his first stay in Tahiti between 1891 and 1893. Noa Noa, whose title means “fragrant” in Tahitian, is an essential account of the painter’s Polynesian experience and the development of his artistic world. Blending memories, observations, and poetic evocations, the book chronicles the birth of a body of work profoundly transformed by the discovery of Oceania. An illustrated edition featuring color reproductions of Gauguin’s works, including several Tahitian compositions. The publisher’s binding shows some soiling and a few visible signs of moisture on the covers. There are quite a few foxing spots on the edges.
