Large folio, red half-maroquin with corner caps, smooth spine decorated with gold fillets and a title stamped in gold. An edition dedicated to the leading figures of the nascent Republic, illustrated with an allegorical title vignette and 79 engraved portraits depicting the principal political, intellectual, and social figures of the 19th century. The work constitutes a remarkable iconographic record of the republican culture of the early years of the Third Republic. The biographical entries, accompanied by engraved portraits of great artistic finesse, offer a panorama of the men who shaped French political life during their time. A copy with a complete set of portraits, preserved in an elegant period binding. The binding is in good condition, with some minor rubbing and wear on the caps and joints, nothing serious. The interior is in good condition, with paper that has uniformly browned over time, as is often the case, and a few scattered foxing spots. A fine copy for reference and collection.
