DORIVAL (Bernard). — Cézanne. Paris, Éditions Pierre Tisné, 1948. A square in-4 volume, in the publisher’s cardboard binding with a color-illustrated dust jacket, in the publisher’s blue-gray cardboard slipcase. Part of the “Prométhée” series, edited by René Huyghe and Germain Bazin. First edition of this important monograph on Paul Cézanne, written by Bernard Dorival, then curator at the Musée national d’Art moderne. The book traces the painter’s artistic evolution, from his earliest compositions to the major works of his mature period, and highlights his decisive role in the birth of modern painting. The study is accompanied by extensive iconographic material reproducing Cézanne’s major works, notably his portraits, landscapes, still lifes, and figure compositions. A particularly well-crafted edition, printing completed on March 12, 1948. The heliogravures were executed by Sapho; the color plates by Acriter, Bussière, and Nouel; and the text was printed by Darantière in Dijon on Condat chestnut paper. The binding was done by Dhuiege. Copy preserved in its original slipcase. Dust jacket slightly faded, with some scuffing and minor marginal wear. Interior appears to be in good condition.
