DORÉ (Gustave). *Bibeln i Bild*. 230 plates by Gustave Doré. No place, Niloe, 1972. Large in-8 volume. Publisher’s binding in full cream-white leather, cold-stamped and decorated on the spine, protected by a Rhodoid cover. A Swedish edition bringing together 230 plates by Gustave Doré devoted to the Old and New Testaments. This remarkable publication reproduces the entire famous biblical cycle by the French master, considered one of the pinnacles of 19th-century illustration. Doré’s compositions, of exceptional dramatic power, have left a profound mark on the Western religious imagination. From the major episodes of Genesis to the prophetic narratives, from the Book of Judges to the Gospels, each scene is rendered with a spectacular sense of light, movement, and grandeur. The illustrations reproduced in this volume rank among the most famous images in the history of the illustrated book. The book features captions and accompanying texts in Swedish. It offers a beautiful overview of Doré’s biblical work and is highly sought after both for the quality of its reproductions and the elegance of its presentation. A copy in its original publisher’s full cream-white leather binding, preserved in its original Rhodoid slipcase. Very slight signs of wear on the Rhodoid and a few discreet traces of handling on the covers. Interior is fresh and complete with all 230 plates. A fine library edition dedicated to the biblical works of Gustave Doré, a leading 19th-century illustrator whose compositions remain among the most iconic in Western religious iconography.
