BECKER (Wolfgang) and FRANZKE (Andreas). — Kalinowski. Drawings, Sketches, Pictures, Paintings, Panel Works. Heidelberg, Rothe Publishing, 1978. A large-format (in-4) volume, in the publisher’s hardcover with a color-illustrated dust jacket. A major monograph devoted to Horst Egon Kalinowski (1924–2013), a German artist whose work straddles the boundaries of painting, sculpture, and assemblage. The book presents the various facets of his creative work, notably his drawings, paintings, and famous caissons—three-dimensional constructions in which the artist combines organic materials, leather, wood, and sculptural elements. Texts by Wolfgang Becker and Andreas Franzke accompany an extensive collection of black-and-white and color illustrations, allowing readers to trace the evolution of his visual language. This publication offers an interesting exploration of a unique figure in postwar European art, whose exploration of materials and relief plays a central role in his body of work. Good copy, with some slight scuffing on the dust jacket.
