A major monograph on Édouard Manet, featuring a text by Georges Bataille and an introduction by Françoise Cachin, curator of the Musée d’Orsay. A new edition of this major study by Georges Bataille, published on the occasion of the centennial of the painter’s death. The author analyzes the aesthetic break introduced by Manet in the history of painting, particularly through *Olympia* and *Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe*, and highlights the seminal role of his work in the emergence of artistic modernity. The book is illustrated with 62 color reproductions. “La Peinture” series, edited by Albert Skira. Good copy, with slight scuffing and minor signs of wear on the cover.
