BARTHOU (Louis). *Les Amours d'un Poète*. Unpublished Documents on Victor Hugo. Paris, Louis Conard, 1919. In-8, publisher's full orange cloth. First edition of this study devoted to the romantic life of Victor Hugo, published by Louis Barthou (1862–1934), a statesman, member of the Académie Française, and great admirer of the poet. Drawing on material that was largely unpublished at the time, the author sheds light on Victor Hugo’s relationships with Adèle Foucher and the women who left their mark on his life, while placing these episodes within the context of Hugo’s literary output. A sought-after work for the quality of its documentation and for its significance in Hugo studies during the first quarter of the 20th century. Copy from the library of W. S. Kennedy, with an ex-libris. Publisher’s binding in full orange cloth. Paper uniformly browned. Some soiling and wear to the cloth, corners slightly rounded. Contents complete and well-preserved despite previous use.
