ALAIN-FOURNIER. *Le Grand Meaulnes*. Paris, Éditions de Cluny, 18 rue de Condé, 1932. In-8, paperback, embossed cover printed in red and black, 316 pp. and [4] pp., untrimmed. Edition published by Éditions de Cluny, featuring a photographic portrait of Alain-Fournier on the frontispiece. The BnF does indeed list this 1932 Paris edition. The colophon is particularly clear: Limited edition of 4,500 copies on Marais laid paper, numbered from 1 to 4,500, plus 100 non-commercial copies. This copy is No. 3,160. It is therefore a copy from the numbered run on Marais laid paper. An identical copy of this edition, also described as having 316 pages and the photographic portrait on the frontispiece, is documented on the market. The "printed" date is December 28, 1932, by Ducros and Colas, master printers in Paris. This edition should not be confused with the first Cluny edition of 1931, illustrated with an etched frontispiece by Alexandre Alexeïeff and printed in a run of 2,000 copies on Voiron laid paper. The 1931 edition is significantly more sought after. The appeal lies in the fact that it has been preserved as a paperback, untrimmed, in its original publisher’s cover with a reinforced spine. The visible interior appears clean, with nice margins and well-preserved paper. However, the cover shows fairly noticeable flaws: a browned spine, a uniformly faded cover, a significant tear at the lower corner and at the bottom of the fore-edge of the front cover, small tears and creases at the ends of the spine, and some signs of wear.
