Giovanni della Robbia (1469-1529) (attr.) Basket with Fruit and Flowers. Polychrome painted and glazed terracotta, modeled in the shape of a basket and decorated with a rich naturalistic composition comprising different varieties of fruit, vegetables, and flowers, including bunches of grapes, lemons, pomegranates, quinces, and small white flowers. Circa 1520 (16x21 cm) (flaws, wear, and losses). The present lot belongs to the celebrated production of the Della Robbia workshop dedicated to refined baskets filled with fruit and foliage, decorative elements frequently employed as lids or finials for major ornamental glazed terracotta vases. Such compositions represent one of the most characteristic outcomes of the naturalistic repertoire developed by Giovanni della Robbia during the first decades of the sixteenth century, distinguished by an extraordinary chromatic richness and an accurate rendering of botanical details. A similar example is kept in the Rodolfo Siviero Collection in Florence and registered in the General Catalog of Cultural Heritage (record no. 0900290995). For comparison, see: G. Gentilini (ed.), I Della Robbia e l'arte nuova della scultura invetriata, Florence, 1998, pp. 277-280. 277-280.
