Two-handled cup known as the ''Warwick Vase (or Hadrian's Vase)'' in bronze, inscribed on the base ''LUGLIO 1879'' (h. 33 cm; d. 57 cm) (defects) This is a reproduction of the famous Roman marble model found in Tivoli at Hadrian's Villa in 1771 by the Scottish antiquarian Gavin Hamilton. The vase, believed to be a ritual drinking vessel, was one of numerous exquisite sculptures with which Emperor Hadrian adorned the gardens of his sumptuous villa. Found in fragments within the sediment of Lake Tiburtina, it was reconstructed by Piranesi for Sir William Hamilton, the British envoy to the court of Naples. From Hamilton's collection, it passed to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, from whom it takes its name. It is currently on display at the Burrell Collection, near Glasgow.
