Meissen Manufactory, 1720–1725. Two-handled porcelain cup and saucer, decorated in gold at a later date with chinoiserie motifs in the workshop of Abraham Seuter, Augsburg, circa 1725–1730. Unmarked (saucer diameter: 13 cm; cup height: 8 cm) (defects and restorations to the cup). The chinoiserie painting positioned on the console, executed in "radiert" (etched/scratched) gold, clearly reveals the hand of the celebrated Seuter workshop in Augsburg, Bavaria. The scene vividly depicts groups of Chinese figures engaged in unusual daily activities, immersed in dense exotic vegetation and surrounded by birds in flight. At the time, the Meissen manufactory maintained close commercial ties with the goldsmiths of Augsburg, sending its porcelain there to be enhanced with precious mounts of gold, silver, or vermeil. It was in Augsburg that specialized workshops emerged to decorate the white porcelain purchased "blank" from Meissen. The talent and artistic sensibility of these independent painters reached such extraordinary levels that the Meissen factory itself, intimidated by such formidable competition, eventually banned the sale of its undecorated white porcelain. IT Manifattura di Meissen, 1720-1725.
