Neapolitan master of the second half of the 18th century "Portrait of a noblewoman or harpsichordist" oil on canvas (179x118 cm.) in a gilt frame (extensive paint losses) The painting may represent the previously unidentified portrait of a female harpsichordist and composer. In addition to the rich decoration typical of official portraiture, details such as the unusual ivory keys of the harpsichord, the aria or composition, probably by Metastasio, and the cultural references—the books and a partially visible portrait to the right—point to a highly educated woman of elevated social standing, such as the renowned composer Maria Teresa Agnesi (Milan, 1720-1795). We are grateful to Maestro Martino Lurani Cernuschi for his advice on the historical and musical aspects of the painting. Provenienza Collezione Principessa Borghese, Sicilia
