Italian manufactory, 18th century. "The Crusaders Reach Jerusalem" from a series of scenes from Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Delivered). Tapestry cartoon (weaving model) painted on linen canvas. Based on the 1689–1693 design by Domenico Paradisi for the San Michele manufactory in the workshop of Pietro Ferroni, woven between 1732 and 1739 (approx. 280 x 315 cm) (severe defects, restorations, and losses). Our model replicates the left portion of the original tapestry, including the border, which is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (accession number 92.1.15). This tapestry was part of an impressive series of fifteen pieces, commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni, grandnephew of Pope Alexander VIII. The entire work is distinguished by its heroic proportions and narrates the fictionalized version of the First Christian Crusade to Jerusalem, inspired by the 16th-century epic poem Gerusalemme Liberata by Torquato Tasso. IT Manifattura italiana, secolo XVIII.
