Workshop of Andrea Della Robbia (1435–1525) A monochrome glazed terracotta sculpture with traces of pigments, depicting the bust of Saint Francis of Assisi. Early 16th century. (46x67x18 cm) (defects and restorations). The Saint is depicted frontally, his gaze directed slightly upward in an attitude of intense devotion and mystic ascetism. He wears the traditional Franciscan habit, with the folds of the drapery finely modeled. With his right hand, he presses a wooden crucifix to his chest, while his left hand holds a closed book—symbols, respectively, of the Passion of Christ and the Rule of the Order. The facial features, the pronounced expressiveness, and the anatomical rendering of the hands reflect the stylistic manner and the refined execution quality of the celebrated Florentine Della Robbia workshop. The work stands out for its compositional balance and the sober solemnity typical of the Tuscan Renaissance.
