MAINDRON (Maurice) *Saint-Cendre*. Illustrations by Guy Arnoux. Paris: Mornay, 1930. A square in-8 volume, full red coarse-grained morocco, covers and spine decorated with a continuous pattern of gilt fillets and featuring a modern hinge, gilt head, covers and spine preserved (binding signed by Lucie Edgar-Faure). Spine faded; upper joint partially cracked. Edition illustrated by Guy Arnoux with numerous color compositions executed using stencils. A top-quality copy; one of three numbered copies on old Japanese paper, each containing one-third of Guy Arnoux’s original watercolors—14 in total here—with a pencil inscription from the publisher: “In memory of a successful hunt in 1930. Best regards." The book recounts the adventures of the Marquis de Saint-Cendre, left for dead in a ditch in the summer of 1569 at the height of the Wars of Religion; of his regaining of his fortune and of the wife who had betrayed him, now taking refuge in the impregnable citadel of Haute-Ganne... The niece of Julien Cain, Director General of the National Library of France from 1930 to 1964, Lucie Faure (née Meyer) was an internationally renowned pre-war bookbinder. She participated in numerous exhibitions of decorative artists abroad and married Edgar Faure [a seasoned politician under the Fourth Republic who served as a deputy for the Doubs department for over 30 years]. She was also a woman of letters [a detail omitted by Fléty].
