DREVET (Joannès). [The Lyon of Our Fathers: A Collection of Early Etchings]. Lyon, 1901. A large quarto volume, in contemporary half-calf binding. Scuffing on the binding, some slight foxing, and wear on the decorative bands. An exceptional collection of pre-print proofs of the etchings executed by Joannès Drevet for Emmanuel Vingtrinier’s *Le Lyon de nos pères*, published in Lyon by Bernoux, Cumin, and Masson in 1901. The book was published with 20 out-of-text etchings and approximately 300 pen-and-ink and pencil drawings. This volume brings together 23 pre-print etchings—three more than the 20 etchings ultimately selected to illustrate the book (The Pont du Change in 1825—The Pont du Change in 1840 (two different views)—. All are printed on heavy Arches laid paper, mounted on gussets, and protected by protective strips; in addition to the signature engraved on the plate, they bear Joannès Drevet’s autograph signature or monogram in graphite in the lower right corner, as well as the handwritten title. A handwritten note on the flyleaf describes the copy as “unique.” A gift copy for Nicolas Sicard (1846–1920), a painter from Lyon, bearing an autograph dedication by Joannès Drevet on the etching on the cover: “To Mr. Nicolas Sicard, painter from Lyon [partially erased] Warmest regards from his friend J. Drevet. December 1901.” Included is the 8-page subscription form (with some soiling).
