[Switzerland] USTERI (Johann Martin) - WOCHER (Marquard). The Sunday Prayer of a Resident of Unterwalde, part of a series of seven scenes from the Swiss Revolution. Based on a work by J. Martin Usteri in Zurich, executed and line-engraved by Marquard Wocher in Basel. Basel, Bern, and Geneva, J.-P. Lamy, ca. 1820/1830. Mounted in a contemporary half-basane folder titled “Souvenir de la Suisse.” Title page and 7 subject-trimmed aquatints, delicately enhanced with watercolor; comprising 8 sheets mounted on large cardboard backing with handwritten captions from the period beneath each view. A rare complete series devoted to the events of the Swiss Revolution and, more specifically, to the Unterwald uprising of 1798, transposing the various invocations of the Lord’s Prayer into the life of a Swiss shepherd confronted with the misfortunes of war: atrocities, the burning of his home, flight, misery, and the loss of his loved ones. COPY IN PERIOD COLORING; the aquatints, normally printed in brown, have here been delicately enhanced with watercolor and retain all their freshness.
