[America] [MOREAU (Jacob-Nicolas)]. Memorandum containing a summary of the facts with supporting documents (...). Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1756. One in-12 volume, in contemporary fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with grotesque motifs, triple fillet framing the covers. VIII, 275 pp. An important diplomatic memorandum concerning the origins of the Seven Years’ War in North America. Drafted “to serve as a Response to the Observations sent by the ministers of England to the Courts of Europe,” the work—supplemented by numerous supporting documents—sets forth the French position in the conflict then pitting the two powers against each other over possession of the territories of the Ohio Valley and Canada. In particular, it includes the journal of George Washington, then a young officer in the Virginia militia, recounting his expedition to the Ohio and the clashes with the French in 1754.
