The Ten Books on the Deeds of the Franks by Paulus Aemilius of Verona, the most distinguished historian; and the Nine Books on the Deeds of the Gauls by Arnoldus Ferronis of Bordeaux, Royal Counselor, added to the history of Paulus Aemilius. Chronicon by J. Tilii on the Kings of the Franks, from Pharamund to Henry II. Paris, Michel de Vascosan, 1555. One volume in-8, contemporary brown calfskin, ribbed spine, covers decorated with a blind-stamped fillet border, a gilt fleur-de-lis in the center, and gilt fleur-de-lis motifs at the corners. Repairs to the spine and title page; a tear at the top of the spine. 448 pp. A Parisian edition, printed in italic type, of this important History of France by the Veronese humanist Paolo Emilio (ca. 1460–1529), a historiographer summoned to France under Charles VIII. His work constitutes one of the first major humanist histories of the French monarchy, spanning from its origins to the reign of Charles VIII. The title page also mentions the sequels by Arnoul Le Ferron and Jean Du Tillet, published separately by Vascosan and likely intended to be bound with this volume. In accordance with the copy held by the BnF, our volume contains only the ten books by Paolo Emilio.
