Signed on behalf of the Prefect by the Secretary General. This historical document is addressed to a mayor in the department to inform him of the official establishment of the “Committee responsible for organizing National Defense in the department of Deux-Sèvres.”The text provides direct evidence of local war efforts in the face of the Prussian invasion, a few weeks after the fall of the Empire. It appeals to the “patriotic devotion” of the municipalities and requests the active assistance of the local community to carry out this “work for the common good.” A handwritten annotation also appears in the upper left margin.
