A remarkable historical set consisting of two original silver-gelatin photographs taken on the spot in the midst of the fighting. These precious visual records capture the passage of a large column of German prisoners under heavy escort by French cavalry and infantry. One of the photos bears a crucial original handwritten note on the back: “Passage of German prisoners on July 4, 16.” This date precisely places the event at the very beginning of the famous Somme Offensive.
