VENETIAN SCHOOL (19th/20th centuries) (Active in Venice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries) A Gallant Scene in Venice Oil on canvas, 122 x 83 cm Signed ‘G. Favretto’ lower left This fine work of museum quality, notable both for its artistic merit and its substantial size, depicts a romantic scene in Venice and belongs to the tradition of historicist genre painting, which was particularly popular in the second half of the 19th century and evoked 18th-century Venice with nostalgia and refined theatricality. From a technical standpoint, the artist draws inspiration from the exponents of Venetian Verismo, adopting an innovative painting style that transcends the rigidity of academic conventions. The “stained” application of color, in fact, lends the painted surface a vibrant textural quality: contours dissolve in favor of rapid, full-bodied, and luminous brushstrokes, capable of rendering the shifting reflections of the lagoon’s water with extraordinary effectiveness. The chromatic refinement is also particularly striking, achieved through bold color combinations, such as the brilliant red of the felze and the gondolier’s robe, set in sharp contrast to the brown, golden, and pearly-gray tones of the architecture. These intense color combinations evoke the luminous and iridescent effect of Venetian mosaics, characteristic of lagoon-style painting from the second half of the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the rendering of light is not uniform but is built through marked chiaroscuro contrasts, which are also the result of the artist’s study of 17th-century Flemish and Dutch painting. In the painting, the figures and the reflections on the water emerge from the deep shadow of the Gothic portico with extraordinary immediacy, lending the entire composition vitality, spatial depth, and intense visual engagement. Overall, the work succeeds in evoking the atmosphere of eighteenth-century Venice with extraordinary effectiveness through an elegant, lively scene rich in narrative suggestion. The skillful orchestration of light, the refined quality of the drawing, the chromatic virtuosity, and the poetic rendering of the architecture and water transform this historical evocation into an aesthetic experience of great intensity, one that is still capable today of engaging the viewer and conveying the timeless charm of the Serenissima.
