ROUSSEAU (Jean-Jacques). The Complete Works of J. J. Rousseau, with Explanations and Historical Notes. Paris, Feret, 1825–1828, 26 volumes, in-8. Cherry-red glazed half-calf bindings, spines with 4 flat false ribs and gilded friezes, 2 olive-green title labels per spine, romantic cold-stamped fleurons, gilded friezes at the ends, marbled edges. (Contemporary bindings). - A fine copy in delicate Romantic bindings. The spines of the later volumes are slightly discolored. Minor foxing throughout the volumes, a few browned quires (notably in Volume XV), and some faint watermarks. Edition printed using the same typefaces as the one recently published by Didot and Dalibon (1824–1828, 27 volumes), but in which the publisher, for unknown reasons, did not include the score for “Le Devin du village” (the 28th volume). It was also printed on the presses of Jules Didot the Elder (on fine paper), and the chronology of publication does not follow the volume numbering. Quérard notes that some titles bear Dalibon’s address, and Dufour associates Feret’s address with that of Baudoin frères. This copy bears Feret’s address, with the exception of Volume XXII (Dalibon), and contains no mention of the publisher. P.-R. Auguis is cited as the author of the notes, but these are primarily a compilation—and at times even word-for-word excerpts—from earlier commentators. - Volume I: Discourse; II: Letter to d’Alembert; III–V: Émile; VI: The Social Contract [and other political works]; VII: Letter to C. de Beaumont; Letters from the Mountain; VIII–X: New Heloise; XI: Botany (no plates), Theater; XII: Miscellaneous Writings; XIII–XIV: Dictionary of Music; XV: Letters on Music (2 music plates); XVI–XVIII: The Confessions; XIX–XX: Dialogues; XXI–XXVI: Correspondence. (Quérard VIII, p. 204 – Dufour II, pp. 58 ff.).
