[Immunity of Clerical Property]. A compilation of 13 publications. No place, 1750–1751, 5 in-12 volumes. Contemporary bindings in light-colored sheepskin with root grain, ribbed spines, decorated panels, and title labels, marbled edges. - Handwritten bookplate on the title pages: de Féligonde. Interior of the volumes is fresh, with minor scuffing on the bindings. Volume I: [BARJETON (Daniel)]. Letters. Ne repugnate vestro bono... Amsterdam, 1750; 2ff.-458pp.-2pp. for the Council of State’s ruling ordering the suppression of this work... Edition published the same year as the original. An important work for the history of the disputes surrounding the immunities of ecclesiastical property. It was commissioned from Daniel Barjeton (a jurist born in Uzès around 1678) by the Controller of Finances Machault, in order to present to the public the proposal to have the Church contribute to public expenditures. Although he doubted the project’s success, Barjeton wrote his letters “Ne repugnate vostre,” so named after the passage from Seneca that serves as their epigraph. This work was banned by a Council decree on June 1, 1750, and placed on the Index through the influence of the clergy on January 25, 1751. It was in connection with this work that Voltaire fabricated the excerpt from the decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rome against a pamphlet titled “Letters on the Twentieth” (Barbier II, 1280). Volume II: Excerpt from the minutes of the General Assembly of the Clergy of France. Held in Paris... in the Year 1750. Third, expanded edition of the King’s Declaration, issued at Versailles on August 17, 1750... Lyon, 1750; 12 pp.–176 pp. An entry in the Cat. Collectif de France attributes this work to a certain Abbé de Nicolay. – [Followed by:] Excerpts from the Minutes of the Clergy, which clearly prove that the gifts offered to the kings by the clergy have always been requested, granted, and received as free, voluntary, and uncompensated gifts. Lyon, 1750; 192 pp. Volume III: Observations on a work entitled: Excerpt from the Minutes of the General Assembly of the Clergy of France, held in Paris... at the Convent of the Grands Augustins, in the year 1750. N.p., November 12, 1750; If.-VII pp.-277 pp. Volume IV: [DURANTHON]. Response to the Letters Against the Immunity of Ecclesiastical Property. Amsterdam, 1750; 1f.-VI pp.-200 pp. - [Followed by, by the same author:] Continuation of the Response to the Letters Against the Immunity of Ecclesiastical Property. No place, 1750; 252 pp. - Barbier IV, col. 304, attributes this work to Abbé Ant. Duranthon based on a note from the Hémery bookstore. - (Quérard II, p. 723). Volume V: [BEAUVAIS]. The Voice of the Christian and the Bishop. Amsterdam, 1751; 39 pp. Barbier I, col. 854, attributes this work to a certain Beauvais, nephew of the custodian of the Clergy’s archives, aged 20. Several works appear to have been published under the same title. - [Followed by:] Supplement to the Sincere Advice to the Prelates Previously Assembled in the Name of the Clergy, Also Serving as a Response to Certain Critics. Amsterdam, 1751; pp. 40–106, following the previous work. - [Followed by:] Le B. S.l., 1750; 16 pages. - [Followed by:] Letter from a London Printer to the Defender of the French Clergy, Regarding the Response to the Letters Against the Immunity of Ecclesiastical Property. London, 1750; 64 pp. - [Followed by:] [BEAUVAIS]. Defense of the Immunity of Ecclesiastical Property. London, 1750; 1f.–II pp.–111 pp. – [Followed by:] Letter from the Archbishop of ** to a State Councilor. N.p., 1751; 83 pp. - [Followed by:] The Voice of the Fool and of Women. London, 1751; pp. 84–94, following the previous work.
