Light brown calfskin binding, ribbed spine decorated with fleurs-de-lis, small metal clasps, and gold dots, marbled edges. (19th- or early 20th-century binding, imitating an older style).—The final (blank) leaf mentioned by Rochebilière is missing here. Minor tears with loss of a few letters or words on folios 209–210 and 233–234. First edition. One of four printings produced simultaneously. This is variant b) described by Tchemerzine VII, p. 42. The errata sheet is signed “S”; the first “buffalo-head” header is correctly oriented; and the letter to Brienne does indeed end with the word “Fin.” Title page features a sphere. The type was supplied by Foppens of Brussels, but the work is considered part of the Elzevirian tradition. (Brunet III, 848 – Tchemerzine VII, p. 44 – Willems, p. 538 – Rochebilière, 436).
