MAFFEI (Scipione). *La Merope*, Tragedy. Compiled and collected by D. Vincenzo Cavallucci Perugino and dedicated to His Most Serene Highness Prince Pietro Grimani, Doge of Venice. Venice, Pietro Bassaglia, 1747, in-4, 4 ff.—XLIV pp.—313 pp.—(1 p.)—1 f. errata. 19th-century ivory half-vellum binding, untrimmed. - Handwritten note on the title page: “Della Libreria Baldigiana.” Barante bookplate. Foxing on a few leaves. *La Mérope* is an ancient tragedy that inspired authors of the Renaissance, the 18th century, and the Neoclassical period. The version by S. Maffei is undoubtedly the most famous. This edition, published by Vincenzo Cavallucci, contains all the commentaries that have appeared since the 1713 Modena edition, as well as Voltaire’s letter to Maffei and the latter’s reply. He dedicates his work to Doge Pietro Grimani, whose coat of arms, engraved in red chalk, adorns the title page.
